A good week of phonics and literacy support this week, with a bit of SATs preparation thrown in for good measure. Children from year one and two have been working on developing their knowledge and awareness of the letter sounds and names. We have been learning the Vowel Song and writing the vowels on our fingers…it’s very handy (excuse the pun), that we have five digits for the five vowels: a, e, i, o and u. These letters are really important as they say their names and their sounds, depending on the word. We also wrote a ‘y’ in the middle of our palm, as this ‘pretends’ to be a vowel sometimes:
- Saying a long ‘i’ sound, like in the word ‘shy’
- Saying an /ee/ sound, like in the word ‘happy’
Take a look at the song...you will find yourself singing it in the shower! www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vf_sXhJ4vo
We also looked at our visual memory and how we can improve this, using strategies like taking a ‘mental photograph’ of what we have seen, counting the number of thing we see, in order to help us to remember them and by saying what we see, to use our ears as well as our eyes, to help us to remember.
This week’s challenge (brought this week, from
www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/memory/simon )
'Simon' is a great visual memory game that many of the parents will recognise from when they were younger. You have to try to remember the sequence of colours and see what the highest score is that you can get. Let me know your high scores!
Have fun and enjoy!
