Week commencing 08 January 2024

Welcome back to Gold Class! I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas break. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Year 6 this week and I am looking forward to the rest of the term with them.

In Mathematics we have looked at fractions. We have learnt how to calculate equivalent fractions and how to convert fractions to decimals. The children have also completed an arithmetic paper to test their knowledge in many areas of the mathematic curriculum.

In English we have set new targets for the term and first focused on writing a letter to our future self. This included thinking about what we want to achieve in the future and I enjoyed reading all the children’s letters. We have also started our topic on poetry, looking at how vocabulary and grammar can change the meaning of a poem. The children also had a great go at writing their own poem based on ‘Rat Race’ by John Agard.

In SPAG this week we have looked at relative clauses and the use of commas to clarify meaning. The children have created punctuation cards for the display board which look great!

In History we have started to look at our topic Maya Civilisation. We looked at where the Maya lived and when the civilisation was, as well as their number system, clothes and food. The children enjoyed having a go at writing their names in Maya glyphs.

In RE we gained an understanding of what the five pillars of Islam are and what each duty means to a Muslim. We also discussed how we can relate this to some things we do in our lives and thought about how it can help us and others.

I have had a fantastic week and I hope the children have too!

See you next week.
