This week we have continued our topic on Winter. We have explored the Antarctica, the Artic Circle and other places on Earth that are known for their cold weather. We have discussed and researched animals that live in cold climates compared to hot climates and why, how people live and survive there, what we would need to take for a visit there and thought about what else we would find there including snow, ice and vehicles we would need to get around these different places. In other areas linked to our topic, we have painted winter animals, made igloos in the construction area, out of lego and sugar cubes. We have identified winter animals in the sensory tray by washing them and matching them to their labels, we have read non-fiction books about winter, cold climates and animals. We have also explored the globe, understanding that it is a representation of the Earth. The children discussed how Earth is where we live, we looked at where the equator is and how this links to the climate of countries and continents around the world. We identified where Antarctica was and the Arctic circle, discussing how long we think it would take to get there, how we would get to these places and who we would travel with.

Linking to our winter topic, we have read 'One Snowy Night', listening to how Percy helps all of the animals in the park to stay warm and safe in the snow. The children made observations of the character Percy and described him as kind, caring, helpful, honest, fair, friendly and a good friend.

In Mathematics we have looked at the composition of numbers; exploring ways of making numbers up to 10. The children have worked really hard on this and have used their knowledge of addition from last week to help support their learning this week.

In Phonics this week we have learnt digraphs ai, ee and oa, as well as trigraph igh.

Another busy and wonderful week of learning in Sunshine class.
