This week a major focus of our learning was about The Black Death and more specifically, the effects that The Black Death had on England at the time. We discussed many different ideas and read through various sources. Below are the ideas that interested us the most and we have come to a decision on whether or not they are a positive or negative result of the plague:

It is estimated that around 1 in 3 people in England died as a result of the disease.

  • Leon Emmett

Animals died – there were not enough people to look after them.

  • Sofia Throp

Peasants could demand higher wages as they knew that a lord  was desperate to get in his

harvest.

  • Alice Dalmeida

Fields went unploughed as there were not enough men to work on the land so this resulted in food shortages.

  • Jaedah Hajarie

In many areas, villages were deserted, so there was more good land for people to grow crops on.

  • Jahi Hajarie

Many Churches closed. It was hard to find enough people to take over the job of priests.

  • Finlay Lewis

Inflation – food prices went up because it was hard to come by.

  • Dawid Shalkevich

In many areas, village populations were greatly reduced, so villagers could ask for higher wages, and serfs could demand their freedom.

  • Max Parkinson

Some villages were left abandoned.
